Reclaiming our Roots in Historic Times

In this time of great uncertainty, we've been exploring ways to lean into the wisdom of our ancestors.

Now is the time to find something deeper to place our trust in. What knowledge can we gain from our ancestors? Can we use this time as an invitation to reflect on the strength and resilience that allowed them to persevere through their challenges and hardships?

For this weeks community offering, we caught up with Malliha (founder of Guud Social and co-founder of Blk Temple) to help us tap into our ancestral wisdom and here’s what she had to say…

What does reclaiming your roots mean to you? Why is it important?

Reclaiming my roots means connecting with ancient ancestral rituals. It means acknowledging, paying homage, and surrendering to soul work. Reclamation is a form of healing and putting respect on our traditions. It's important to me because it is me.

These traditions, wisdom, magic, power, and gifts live within my vessels.... it only makes sense to tap into that infinite wealth of ancestral knowledge and wisdom.

Tell us a little about your journey of unpacking identity (shared and/or individual) Who do you identify as today?

My journey with unpacking my identity has been interesting. I am a seeker (and I will be seeking and evolving eternally).

I yearn for discovering the intangible, unexplainable, and profound layers of my soul. My identity is threaded into Mama Earth. I came from her and her essence is within me.

In the human realm, I am Black, Pakistani, & Queer. I am an expansive creative spirit on a powerful healing journey for those before and after me (and for lifetimes that exist in parallel dimensions). I am everything and nothing.

How can the BIPOC community benefit from learning more about their roots and identity? What can allies do to help?

The BIPOC community can benefit from learning about their roots because it is a major piece of who they are. In order to live in wholeness (oneness) you have to tap into your roots.

Radical listening, integration, learning, and observing will help you understand the layers of your purpose and soul body. Having the courage to live completely free of self-judgment and doubt makes space for you to dive into your soul and ancestral work.

Allies can help by helping non-allies heal and acknowledge their inherited deep-seated pain. I feel like that's a divine step in the direction of accountability and respect.

We are in historic times, there is no playbook on how to manage our emotions or how to handle what’s happening.

The more we can come together (virtually) in solidarity the better equipped we will be to handling the moments where we feel lost, afraid, or disconnected.

We’d love to hear from you! Have you been using this time to tap reclaim your roots? What has been coming up from you?
